14th Annual Home Wine Makers' Contest

Celebrating over 150 Years of Winemaking in Nauvoo!

 

Baxter's Vineyards hosted their 14th Annual Amateur Oenology Contest along with a Baxter Family Reunion on June 28, 2008. Contestants brought their homemade vintages to Baxter's Vineyards/Winery to be judged by our panel of seven amateur judges. The contest judged eighteen winemakers with fifty-one wines. There were also approximately 35 Icarian descendants and Baxter family members in attendance.  

Baxter family members started the day off by exhuming a barrel with a bottle of 2006 Golden Hills Classic Norton wine inside. Family members toasted a successful event and re-buried the barrel with a bottle of the 2007 Golden Hills Classic Norton inside. The family members then held a educational session on grapevines and Icarian and Baxter artifacts. The family also visited the Wasserzieher Wine cellar and took family pictures. The day was completed with a meal at Hotel Nauvoo. 

Wine masters and lovers of wine enjoyed the day sampling the homemade vintages as well as trading ideas and techniques of the fine art of home wine making. Moses and Carol of Carol's Pies provided a tasty cookout of blue cheese burgers and grilled turkey breasts with all of the trimmings. There was also peanut butter, coconut creme, fresh cherry, and creme cheese pecan pie for dessert.

After a successful afternoon the winners for the 6 wine categories were announced. Each home wine maker received a certificate of participation.  The winners received a ribbon along with the certificate of participation.  The Best of Show will receive 10 gallons of grape juice and a Baxter's Vineyards t-shirt.  The winners are as follows:

Class I: Red Grape

1st Place: Roger Tripp with Fredonia wine    

2nd Place: Dennis Seigfried with Fredonia wine 

3rd Place: Sheila Windmar Wagner with Oaked Concord wine

 

Class II: White Grape

1st Place: Bobbi Kooyman with Riesling Auslese wine

2nd Place: Nick Wilkens with Niagara wine

3rd Place: Bobbi Kooyman with Vidal, Chenin Blanc, Muscat & Gewurztraminer wine

Class III: Pink Grape

1st Place: Bobbi Kooyman with White Shiraz wine

2nd Place: Kevin Westby with Catawba wine

3rd Place: Steve Swan & Mike Pribyl with Catawba wine

Class IV: Fruit Wines

1st Place: Ed Lemberger with Apple wine

2nd Place (tie): Glen Wagner with Pear wine

2nd Place (tie): Wayne Ebelherr with Cherry wine

3rd Place: Sheila Widmar Wagner with Cranberry/Raspberry wine

 Class V: Blends

1st Place: Sheila Widmar Wagner with Raspberry White Grape wine

2nd Place: Steve Swan & Mike Pribyl with Concord Catawba wine

3rd Place (tie): Glenn Wagner with Concord Elderberry wine

3rd Place (tie): Sheila Widmar Wagner with White Grape Peach wine

 Class VI: Other

1st Place: Glenn Wagner with Rhubarb wine

2nd Place: Jason Boyle with Cherry Kool-aid wine

3rd Place: Jason Boyle with Orange Kool-aid wine
